All individual tax returns are run through an automatic process for compliance checks and potential fraudulent behavior. If your return hits a behind the scenes rule, it will be manually reviewed by our Individual Tax Compliance team. In many cases, you will receive a letter to prove your identity or to submit additional information in order to continue processing your return.
Allow a minimum of three weeks for electronically-filed returns and 12 weeks for paper-filed returns. Inquiries can be made on refund amount(s) from 2017 to the current tax season. It normally takes seven business days for financial institutions to receive and process funds once DOR initiates a direct deposit.

If you received a letter, there are a few extra steps needed in order to continue the processing if your return. Your return will be on hold until you complete the steps outlined within the letter or until the deadline to do so passes.

The information from a taxpayer’s Federal Schedule C is included as part of the taxpayer’s Indiana tax return. The request for more information regarding your business is not an audit requiring full business reports. Instead, DOR requests proof of a few sections of the Federal Schedule C. If you received an ID Theft Victim letter, a fraudulent return was filed using your information, and it is no longer processing. No further steps are needed from you by DOR. Read more about Fraud Prevention.
